Your Skin Is Not Happy but Why? Getting to the Cause of Skin Sensitivities
Redness, irritation, dryness, flaking, and breakouts are possible signs that your skin is suffering. Causes of sensitive skin reactions may include:
- Overly dry or injured skin that can no longer protect nerve endings, leading to skin reactions.
- Excessive exposure to skin-damaging environmental factors such as sun and wind or excessive heat or cold.
- Genetic factors, age, gender, and race differences in skin sensitivity may play a role in causing skin reactions.
- Skin disorders or allergic skin reactions such as eczema, rosacea, or allergic contact dermatitis.
One simple step to help alleviate issues is to make sure your reactions are not coming from products with hidden irritants, such as cleansers, toners, and sunscreen...even if they say “for sensitive skin” or “all skin types”.
Sensitizing ingredients to watch out for
Fragrance
Or parfum as it is sometimes called, can have up to 200 scent chemicals, making it one of the most common culprits responsible for reactions to personal care products.
Essential oils
While we are fans of the powerful benefits of essential oils, some people may not be able to tolerate the naturally occurring fragrance allergens.
That’s just one reason we formulated The Purist Delicate Skin Serum, free from essential oils, alcohol, allergens, fragrance, photosensitizing ingredients, nuts, gluten, fillers, chemical preservatives, or other substances that could wreak havoc on sensitive skin.
"I am hooked. I have to say it is now peak pollen season, it’s everywhere and I am not scratching my neck, not feeling irritated and my skin tone is looking more even and brighter." ~ Lydia R.
Propylene glycol
Like PEGs (petroleum compounds), propylene glycol helps ingredients to be absorbed by the skin more readily...meaning it can also help it absorb things that are harmful to you and can cause allergic reactions.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
SLS is known to be a skin irritant. It can strip the skin of its natural oils which can cause dry skin, irritation, and inflammatory reactions like dermatitis and eczema, and dermatitis.
Chemical sunscreens
These can cause an eczema-like allergic reaction that can spread beyond the exposed area and last long after you’re out of the sun with chemicals including oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.
"I have super dry skin but I also was diagnosed with Rosacea last year. I had 3 people ask me about what I have been using today and I am sending them all your way! "~ Amber B.
